Can I use puppet open source to manage windows hosts updates on active directory and whats the difference between the open source for windows and the enterprise ?

Are you talking about Windows Updates (patching), managing objects within Active Directory, or managings windows hosts in an Active directory domain. I am working on a bit of tooling in each of these areas.

Technically puppet can manage anything on windows, when coupled with powershell through the exec resource. So you can manage AD and windows updates through this avenue, though idempotence and exit codes are left up to you to define success and failure. There are also numerous ... (more)

AD itself does not handle patch management. Patch Management on windows, at least natively is handled via Automatic Updates, and can be pointed either to Windows Update, or an internal WSUS server.
