You'd be better off building a proper package and installing via your internal repo. However the problem you're running into is that the default Exec timeout is 300 seconds. You might try adding a timeout to your Exec as in the following.

exec { "install openmpi-${hpl::params::openmpi_version}":
  cwd         => "${hpl::params::home}/openmpi-${hpl::params::openmpi_version}",
  command     => "${hpl::params::home}/openmpi-${hpl::params::openmpi_version}/configure --prefix=${hpl::params::openmpi_home} && make && make install",
  logoutput   => true,
  refreshonly => true,
  timeout     => 1800,
  alias       => "install-openmpi",

I just tested it and seemed to work fine, Notice: /Stage[main]/Main/Exec[/bin/sleep 600]/returns: executed successfully, Notice: Finished catalog run in 600.06 seconds using timeout ...(more)
