We are in the process of updating our servers from Lucid/Precise to Trusty, and unfortunately it appears that Ubuntu upstream packges for Puppet are 3.4.x and Puppet Labs' packages are 3.6.x.

Is there any way to get a 2.7.x release of Puppet for Ubuntu 14.04?

Thanks

Puppet 2.7 on Trusty is going to be more trouble than it's worth because Trusty ships with Ruby 1.9.3. Puppet 2.7 isn't going to work very well if at all with 1.9.3.

I recommend pushing your current Precise machines to 3.4.3. Once you've done that either the default packages on Trusty or the 3.6.x packages from Puppet Labs should work fine. I'm currently running exactly this setup while I decide how I want to deal with the environment and node directory stuff in 3.6.
