Fresh build from DVD of Fedora 21 with Gnome desktop on a dual Xeon 2.5GHz 4-core x86_64 with 16GB RAM and 50GB primary partition BIOS dated June 2012.

Checked off preinstallation list: Ruby, DNS (hosts file edit), SSH and internet connectivity.

Download, tar and run puppet-enterprise-3.2.7-x64 for RHEL6/CentOS6; puppet-enterprise-installer.

Result: !! Error: Unknown platform

Same result produced by puppet-enterprise-uninstaller.

Rebuild from DVD of Fedora 20 ... same result.

Why no hits on any search for that error?

Will Puppet Enterprise open source work on this platform or not?

Is it necessary to license Fedora an/or Puppet Enterprise prior to installation?

Puppet Enterprise is not supported on Fedora, only on the following supported platforms: https://docs.puppetlabs.com/pe/latest/installsystemrequirements.html#operating-system

You can certainly install Puppet open-source on Fedora, and please follow the instructions here to do so: https://docs.puppetlabs.com/guides/installpuppet/installfedora.html

The Puppet licensing FAQ can be found here: https://puppetlabs.com/licensing-faq and you can manage up to 10 nodes for free with PE.

Fedora is open-source, and you do not have to license it for commercial use, nor could you, but IANAL and not a licensing specialist.

Hope that helps!
