I have an Ubuntu PuppetMaster instance.

I need to manage a F5 BIG-IP (v10.2.4) device.

I'm following the directions posted on the puppetlabs site ( I don't have enough "karma" to post the link ).

Is it possible for the f5_proxy node to be co-located with the PuppetMaster server ? Or need they be separate servers ?

Alternately, perhaps I can perform my testing against the a software version of F5 ( F5 Virtual Appliance ) -- is it possible to install Puppet Agent on a software F5 box ?

What are the best practices ?

The proxy can be the same system as the puppetmaster, it doesn't need to be a dedicated host. This is no different from installing puppet master/agent on the same system.

There's no reason to install puppet agent on the F5 device for several reason:

  • It's not supported, and F5 does not preserve these kind of customization during upgrades.
  • The puppet module manages F5 via iControl, so it's not manipulating files/commands on the F5 devices directly.

The Puppet agent and master use the same binary (typically `/usr/bin/puppet`), and thus are the same version. If you have concerns about the version being installed from your ...(more)
