We are running a typical LAMP environment and I am looking for a good practice way to manage the service config files for each stage: development, staging, production.

  • apache config
  • php config
  • varnish

I read R10k, but that is more like for Puppet code management. Any guide would be much appreciated.

Hiera is used to to keep your site-specific data from appearing in your code whereas environments are a way of allowing you to have different versions of your puppet code in your dev, staging, production environments. R10K is used to manage your shared puppet modules. So you'll likely need to have environments AND hiera.
