Running Puppet Enterprise 2015.2.3 as puppet master on our linux server we noticed that it consumes a lot of memory. We have installed this machine with 12GByte of memory, but puppet fills most of it. In our test environment where we evaluatie puppet we ran easily in 4GByte of memory. Both configurations only use 2 puppet agents on Windows. What can be our problem? We have installed puppet enterprise 2015 out of the box. Thanks for your feedback, Kor Molenmaker MARIN, the Netherlands.

our memory consumption:

From the puppet logs at /var/log are there any OOM errors reflecting a memory leak? I've come to realize this has been a persistent case with Puppet on prior versions, nt sure if they have fixed it yet.

Hi,
you have 11GB for caching.
So the 900MB in the swap are not bad, the kernel uses swap for memory that is static.
So, drop the cached and send a free -m.
Like: echo 3 > /proc/sys/vm/drop_caches
Also, puppet-pe-puppetserver javas default config is to use 2,5G RAM.
Of course you have an overhead for caching which can get very big.
I agree, that the memory consumption increased comparing to 2015.2.
E.g:
19458 pe-pupp+ 20 0 5793904 2.433g 11980 S 1.0 31.1 693:02.25 java
Perhaps a problem with javas garbage collection.

Rgds.

Franz

A new service has been introduced in puppet pe 2015.3.
The orchestration service. It consumes about 300MB RAM,
but reserves 3,4GB vmem.
So you should have at least 8GB installed in your server.
