This all depends on several factors: 1) How many cores does your puppet master have? 2) How large are the catalogs for each node? 3) Do all the puppet applies need to run at once or can they be scheduled to run at different times?

If you are looking for a point of reference I can tell you from experience the open source puppet server will handle 1000+ nodes on 12 cores when the timing of the puppet runs are appropriately spaced out. This is under a work load doing both OS and middleware configurations.

@dbschofield , thank you so much for the answer

I had found some more details below and updating this discussion so that it may be useful.

Puppetmaster scaling depends on a number of variables, unfortunately. There isn't a planning document you can reference to see how many nodes you can throw at a master before you need to start getting fancy with things.

The following environmental differences affect the master-to-node ratio:

The number of files pulled during a cycle The frequency of Agent updates of catalog data The frequency of unstaged nodes getting staged up (rationalizing an existing node is fast, staging up a brand new one is expensive) The complexity of the modules being applied Any plugins that may be used above and beyond what comes stock Get the wrong mix and even 500:1 will be too much. Get it right and you can go into the four or even five figures to one.
