Thank you for you time and attention I have a vagrant box that runs SLES 11. I want to be able to install PE 3.8 puppet master on the vagrant box.

But the way I want to do it is to put a "minimal puppet agent" that I can install using a NON-RPM approach (so it won't be run from /opt/puppet).

This puts the bare minimum puppet agent and then I do a puppet apply on the vagrant box with this bare minimum puppet agent and the puppet apply will install the puppet master on the vagrant box.

My question is Is it even possible to put bare min puppet agent without using the standard RPM approach on a box ?

If RPM is the only way to put the agent, how do I uninstall the bare min RPM on its way out ?

Have you looked into Beaker? It probably already does most of what you're trying to do here, including methods for building a Puppet Master on a vagrant box.

Based on what you've said here:

# yum install rubygems
# gem install puppet --version x.x.x --no-ri --no-rdoc

That's pretty much a minimal build.
