Trying to install puppet-agent on client servers running CentOS5 and CentOS6. Ran

# rpm -ivh

# rpm -ivh

on the respective servers. In the /etc/yum.repo.d/puppetlabs.repo file I enabled each of the repos. When I ran:

# yum install puppet-agent

the output listed the puppetlab packages installed, but the last line was: No package puppet-agent available

I confirmed that there was no service 'puppet-agent' available on the server.

Tried running:

# yum -y install puppet

on these client servers, but the same results, no service puppet-agent available on the server

I have the feeling I'm missing something very obvious to a more experienced puppet user. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Try yum install mcollective-puppet-agent. If that doesnt work show the output of yum repolist

Can you clarify, when you ran yum -y install puppet are you sure you still saw a message, "no service puppet-agent available"?

The puppet-agent package is part of the Puppet Collection 1 (PC1) repo at (for CentOS 6), as noted in

The repo you pull down is limited to the Puppet 3.x line.

Thanks to both UBP and Alex for your responses.

I used the command:

# curl -k https://puppet.mydomain.local:8140/packages/current/install.bash | sudo bash

to get the Puppet Enterprise packages for my server running CetOS v6.7. This worked fine since the Puppet Master is running on the same O/S. However, it would not work on the CentOS v5.11 server because that O/S is using an older OpenSSL version. I upgraded the OpenSSL to v 1.0.1r 28 Jan 2016, but the curl command would still not work. The Puppet Master is used OpenSSL v 1.0.1e-fips 11 Feb 2013. Apparently, the two version are incompatible. I was preparing to install all the dependencies for 1.0.1e-fips when I decided to try UBP suggestion:

# install mcollective-puppet-agent

and that worked. I was able to start the puppet agent on the CentO/S v5.11 servers and that server is reporting to the Puppet Master. I should add one note here that the command to start puppet agent is not:

# service puppet-agent start

it should be

# service puppet start

Thanks for both of you for your responses and help.
