Puppet master in private network to control public VPS

I was wondering if it is possible (and a good idea) to install puppet master on a privately controller server and use it to control different virtual private servers in "the cloud".

This is essentially what I do. I run my puppet master with port 8140 exposed to the wider internet. There are security risks there, but I track latest on apache and puppet. My plan going forward is to use the firewall puppet module and exported resources to have nodes export a firewall allow rule for their host, then have a catchall deny on the puppet master. There is a bit of a chicken and egg problem with that so I haven't done it yet.

Instead of running dashboard or foreman, I use the new puppetboard experimental dashboard for visualization ... (more)
