I'm trying to install Puppet 4, but when I install it per the instructions, I only get Puppet 3.8.5.

For instance, if I follow the links here:

Or the instructions here:

I end up here:

Which tells me to:

# wget
# dpkg -i puppetlabs-release-pc1-xenial.deb

Which I do, followed by "apt-get update" and "apt-get upgrade". However, if I install "puppetmaster":

# apt-get install puppetmaster

I end up with:

# puppet master --version

I can't seem to discover a way to install or upgrade a 4.x Puppet master or Puppet client.

What am I missing?

The package names have changed a bit between versions 3 and 4. The puppet-agent package contains puppet and several dependencies (see here). It also includes a "puppet master" subcommand, but I think that's not intended for use as a daemon.

If you're interested in setting up a puppet master in a typical version 4 configuration then you'll want to install the puppetserver package. Puppetserver runs the master on a JVM and is intended for production usage.

Thank you - I see:

  • The "puppet" package has been replaced by "puppet-agent" in 4.0.
  • The "puppetmaster" has been replaced with "puppetserver" in 4.0.

Because there are bundled packages with Ubuntu, if I make the mistake of using the old names (I did), then I get whatever version the Ubuntu release includes (3.8.5-2 here).

Thanks - that helps a lot!
