Hi all,

Can an existing puppetserver manage another puppetserver ? I'm trying to separate the Windows and Linux environments on 2 servers an the puppet server which is managing Windows env should be nice to have it managed by the main puppet server. Did anyone do something like this? Can this be even possible?

Thank you

Yes, this can be done. This is what's known as a Master of Masters or Compile Master setup. Here are instructions on how to set it up:

There are two different concerns, does he want one 'master of masters' that handles certs, and different compile masters for the other environments, or is the windows puppet server just a 'node' that is managed by the Linux puppet server, and the windows nodes are managed by it?

What I want to achieve is one puppet server which manages the linux infrastructure to manage also the puppet server which takes care of the Windows infrastructure. I'm not really sure if MoM setup will fit my needs.

Slightly modified, it should. It's just that your CA master will also compile catalogs for your linux infrastructure. You don't want to try to have a master be a client of another master and not utilize it for CA purposes. I'm not sure if that would even work, but it would be confusing if it did.

lavaman, thank you for your answer. I thought this too but wasn't sure if it possible or not. But like you mentioned, this is a bad idea to have a master be a client of another master, therefore I will go with MoM setup and have different environments with balnced traffic. Thanks
