Can I attach an email address to a node?

Hello, I plan on rolling Puppet out to hundreds of users working remotely. I am looking for ways of keeping track of these nodes more easily based on email address (they are not connected to an AD domain). Ideally, the email address would be specified somewhere on the user's device (e.g. a text file) and then communicated back to the Puppetmaster.

Is this possible? Maybe by adding a custom fact to Facter?

Yes its possible through a custom fact:

For example, i store server info in the registry, and i use ruby to read the key values as facts.

Alternatively, it sounds like this email is going to uniquely identify the nodes, you could even just make the email the actual nodes cert name since they are not in AD. The certname is normally the FQDN, but it does not have to be. This is probably not recommended, but if this fits your need then go for it.
