PE Console Groups & Environments

I'm curious to see if it's possible to use a group's variables to specify an environment in the Puppet Enterprise Console. I have a windows agent that performs as expected for either of these conditions:

  • The agent's puppet.conf specifies environment=puppet_windows
  • Puppet agent is invoked with --environment puppet_windows

I added a new group in the Puppet Enterprise Console called Windows. Then I specified a variable environment, set it to puppetwindows, added the class that is solely in the puppetwindows environment, and lastly added my windows agent to the group.

Well, it turns out that variable setting is a top scope variable available for manifests. [source]. That doesn't appear to help me at this point, but it answers my main question of what that variable does.
