What does this error mean, and how do I diagnose and fix it?

Would you run Puppet with debug and trace enabled, and post more of the log?

There's nothing in the debug and trace output of the logs. I am updating the ticket with more information.

Does both `hostname` and `hostname -f` return the correct values?

As per I have upgraded to PE 3.1.0, and I no longer get this error.

For what it's worth, I checked the hieradata for syntax errors.

No, apparently there was a syntax error in an alias: I used *&foo instead of *foo.
