managing hiera data

does anyone know of any opensource tools that allow you to manage your hiera data? Currently we are using yaml to store our hiera data but this will start to become a little cluttered when we have a couple of hundred sets of yaml files for our multi-tenanted environments. I'm just wondering if anyone uses or knows of any projects that solve this problem. I understand hiera and there are different datasources that can be used. However I'm looking for something that can capture data and persist this to the relevant backend datastore along with manage the ... (more)

I use the YAML backend, because the format is easy for admins to pick up. We manage the data with open source tools, git and vim.

They only released documentation on writing custom hiera backends a couple of months ago, so I doubt there are any projects that are useful yet. This was an issue for me for a long time and I've never used hiera due to its reliance on files. Here are the docs for creating a custom backend, in case you're feeling ambitious ;)
