Instead of deploying an agent (which means Ruby Libraries, Runtime etc) on my node, if I use a plugin that runs on the puppetmaster, but uses REST API to talk to the node (Say I already have some REST API which I would like to reuse in this context) to achieve the RUN functionality of the node, would that be a viable option?

Theoretically this would be possible, but every time a new version of Puppet was released, you'd have to update your plugin and API, and you would also have to make a huge investment in reinventing the Puppet agent.

In practical terms, no, this is not a viable option.
