Which forge modules should I choose?

I can see lots of different modules available to download from the Puppet forge to manage, for example, Apache - how do I go about choosing which one to download and use?

When I look at modules on the Forge, I use the following list to select a module to try out first.

  1. Has someone recommended the module to me? If so, try that one. (I look for recommendations on the puppet-users mailing list.)
  2. Is the module intended to operate on the operating system I'm working with? (If not, I look for a module that does operate with my operating system. If there isn't one, then I consider contributing additional platform support to an existing module.)
  3. Does the module have some way to automatically run through example behaviors and validate ...

Puppet encourages the use of semantic versioning If the version is below 1.0.0, ie: 0.y.z, then it is still undergoing development and not a stable module. If you want stability, look for at least 1.0.0.
